Reed’s School joins TackleTEK as a Founding Partner

Leading Surrey school partners with TackleTEK to help pioneer a measurable approach to tackle development and player welfare in school rugby.

We’re delighted to welcome Reed’s School as a Founding Partner of TackleTEK.

Reed’s joins a select group of schools working directly with us to help shape a new approach to how tackling is assessed, coached and developed.

The tackle remains the highest-risk area of rugby, yet tackling technique is still predominantly assessed through coach observation.

We want to change that.

Making tackling a measurable skill

TackleTEK is being developed to give coaches an objective way of measuring individual tackle competency.

Using video analysis, computer vision and biomechanical modelling, the platform is designed to help coaches identify players who require additional support, understand specific areas for development and track improvement over time.

The aim isn’t to replace the coach’s eye.

It’s to give coaches another layer of objective information to support the decisions they’re already making.

As Tom Street, Head of Rugby at Reed’s School, explains:

“We’re always looking at how we can improve the way we develop our players. What interested us about TackleTEK was the opportunity to add objective measurement to something that has traditionally relied heavily on the coach’s eye.”

“If we can establish clear standards for safe and competent tackling, identify where individual players need support and track whether they’re improving, that could be really valuable.”

Developing clear standards for tackling

Our work with Reed’s is also exploring what a progressive approach to tackle competency could look like within school rugby.

Rather than simply asking whether a player can or cannot tackle, we want to understand whether players can consistently demonstrate the competencies required to tackle safely and effectively.

That means starting in controlled environments before progressively introducing greater movement, speed and space.

Building alongside coaches

Becoming a Founding Partner means Reed’s won’t simply be using TackleTEK.

Their coaches will help us build it.

The school has an experienced coaching and performance team bringing knowledge from international and professional rugby, athletic development, coach education and high-performance environments.

We’ve also had positive early discussions with the school’s medical team around how better measurement of tackling could contribute to player welfare.

Andy Jones, Founder of TackleTEK, said:

“Reed’s is exactly the type of school we wanted involved as a Founding Partner. The coaching and medical teams have been incredibly open to exploring how we can improve tackle development as they look to continually increase the quality of their rugby programme on and off the pitch.

“We’re not trying to replace the coach’s eye. We want to combine coaching expertise with objective measurement so we can better understand who needs support, what they need to work on and whether they’re actually improving.

“Having a team with the experience of the Reed’s Rugby staff will help us build something that is beneficial for teams – that is incredibly valuable.”
