Millfield School joins TackleTEK as a Founding Partner

TackleTEK is working with Millfield to explore how objective tackle data can help coaches deliver more individualised coaching and measure player development over time.

We’re excited to welcome Millfield School as a TackleTEK Founding Partner.

As one of the country’s leading sporting schools, Millfield brings extensive experience in player development and performance. Their rugby coaching team will now work alongside TackleTEK as we continue developing technology designed to make tackling a measurable skill.

But for us, the most exciting part of the partnership isn’t simply collecting more data.

It’s what coaches can do with it.

Turning tackle data into better coaching

Tackling has traditionally been assessed largely through the coach’s eye.

Experienced coaches can identify technical strengths and weaknesses, but objectively measuring those areas across an entire squad — and tracking whether they improve — is much more difficult.

TackleTEK uses video analysis, computer vision and biomechanical modelling to assess individual tackle competency and provide coaches with objective information about player technique.

Our early work with Millfield is beginning to show how that information can be translated into practical coaching decisions.

Rather than giving an entire squad the same technical intervention, coaches can use the data to identify common faults, understand where individual players need additional support and group players according to specific development needs.

That creates the opportunity for much more targeted coaching.

“That’s where the real gold dust is”

John Mallett, Director of Rugby at Millfield School, said:

“The summary reports are really useful for identifying common faults and creating measurable coaching impact.

“What’s most valuable is using the data to have direct conversations with players about their performance — that’s where the real gold dust is.

That feedback gets to the heart of what we want TackleTEK to become.

The technology isn’t being developed to replace the coach’s eye.

It is being developed to give coaches another layer of information that can help answer three important questions:

Who needs support?

What specifically do they need to work on?

Is the coaching intervention actually making a difference?

Andy Jones, Founder of TackleTEK, said:

“Millfield is exactly the type of environment we wanted involved as a Founding Partner. They have an outstanding rugby programme, but importantly, they also have coaches who are willing to explore how better information can improve what happens on the pitch.

“What has been particularly valuable is seeing how the data can create more individualised conversations between coaches and players.

“We can provide the measurement, but ultimately a coach still has to turn that information into better coaching. Working alongside environments like Millfield will help us make sure we build something that genuinely works for coaches.”

Building TackleTEK with coaches

As a Founding Partner, Millfield will continue working directly with TackleTEK as the platform develops.

Their feedback will help shape how information is presented to coaches, how individual and squad-level performance is measured and how TackleTEK can be practically integrated into rugby programmes.

The partnership forms part of our wider ambition to make tackling a measurable skill and give coaches better tools to support player development, performance and welfare.
