We’re excited to welcome Lord Wandsworth College as a TackleTEK Founding Partner.
The Hampshire school has already begun using TackleTEK with players from its Year 9 and 1st XV squads, with coaches receiving both squad and individual analysis.
Now, we’re working together to explore an important next step:
How do we turn tackle data into better coaching?
TackleTEK is being developed to objectively measure individual tackle competency using video analysis, computer vision and biomechanical modelling.
But identifying an area for development is only useful if a coach knows what to do next.
That’s an area we’ve been developing with Lord Wandsworth.
Alongside showing coaches where players can improve, we’re working towards connecting the analysis with practical coaching interventions, including suggested areas of focus and examples of sessions coaches can use with their players.
The analysis can then be broken down further to help coaches understand the development needs of individual players.
Lewis Starbuck, Head of Rugby at Lord Wandsworth College, said:
“The level of detail is really useful. What I particularly like is the next step of showing coaches what they need to work on with their players and giving examples of the sessions they can run.
“Being able to then break that down to each individual player is really valuable. It means the data can become something practical that coaches can actually use to support their players.”
Lord Wandsworth College is a strong rugby school with a clear commitment to developing players across different ages and abilities.
The College has also worked closely with our friends at Lions Sports Academy for a number of years, giving us first-hand experience of the importance they place on the quality of their rugby provision and player development.
That makes their proactive approach to tackle development and player welfare a natural fit for TackleTEK.
Following the initial testing with Year 9 and 1st XV players, our ambition is to work towards testing the wider rugby programme.
The goal is to create a consistent pathway where players can be assessed, supported with appropriate coaching and re-tested to measure their development.
Andy Jones, Founder of TackleTEK, said:
“Lord Wandsworth is a great example of why we created the Founding Partner programme. We don’t want to develop TackleTEK in isolation and then tell coaches how they should use it. We want good rugby environments challenging what we’re building and helping us make it better.
“Measurement on its own isn’t enough. If we identify something a player needs to improve, the next question has to be what the coach does about it.
“If we can connect assessment to a specific coaching intervention, then re-test the player and objectively demonstrate improvement, that’s where I think this can become really valuable.”
